TV After My Own Heart

Give me the choice and I will watch a sitcom over reality television any day of the week.

Old favorites like I Love Lucy, Green Acres, Golden Girls, Seinfeld, Friends… the more recent Big Bang Theory and Modern Family… they’re always my preference.

I recently wondered why I’m so drawn to them, and I surprised myself with the answer.

It isn’t about the laughs or the writing or the actors. It’s the setting. The overlapping of stories. The community of characters.

I long for community.

I love how the characters come and go through each other’s houses and offices and restaurants and lives. I love the revolving door of friends and family. I love the lack of seclusion and isolation.

It’s all so unscheduled and comfortable and effortless.

It’s fake, I know. It’s completely scheduled and written and intentional, but I think it’s art imitating what life should be.

It’s how I’d like to live.

So feel free to stop by without calling and I’ll try to have something witty to say.

Missing a Guilty Pleasure

Sure, some people wrote it off as silly or as a cheap 90210 copy. Not me. And even though I didn’t watch the last two seasons- mainly because Abby came along- here are the top 5 reasons I miss watching The O.C.:

1.The music. Give credit where credit is due. The O.C. offered some great soundtracks… especially for a teenage dramedy. If you didn’t pay attention to the show for the plot, you should have at least been listening to the music.

2. Adam Brody. His stuttering (mostly improvised) one liners and nerdy cuteness drew me to the show from the beginning and kept me until the end.

3. Tate Donavan. Ah, if I didn’t already love him for matching Sandra Bullock’s sweetness in Love Potion No. 9, I would have loved him for playing the boyish dad of Marissa Cooper.

4. Peter Gallagher’s eyebrows. Every single time that man was in a scene, all I did was watch his eyebrows. So bushy. So expressive. So very comical. I don’t remember what the rest of his face looks like but I miss those eyebrows.

5. The talking. Like Scrubs and The Gilmore Girls, fast talking and quick wit are a huge part of The O.C.  With 2 of the 3 already gone, I’m feeling a little underwhelmed by the conversations on scripted tv right now.

That’s it. Anyone else missing a show that you probably shouldn’t have watched in the first place?

Hollywood Happenings

In case you don’t waste time keeping up with the celebrities like I do, let me fill you in on two items that made me both happy and sad today.

1. Good news-  Zac Efron has dropped out of the Footloose remake. Hooray! Bad news- They’re still planning on remaking it. If you don’t know my issue with that, see my former rant on the topic.

2. Good news- David Letterman has gotten married. He’s in my top 5 celebrities I’d like to be friends with so I’m happy for him, his wife and their child! Bad news- this means there is little chance he and Julia Roberts will ever become a couple as I so desperately wish.

Any TV Producers Out There?

After being forced inside by crappy weather, I’ve seen quite a few kid’s TV shows this week. Due to that, I have a proposal that I’d like to present.

It appears that there are 3 prominent branches of child friendly TV- Noggin, Disney, and Nickelodeon. Sure, there are a few good shows on each of the networks, but none are 100% awesome.

So here’s my idea- why don’t we bring the good stuff back? Put it all in one place.

I was thinking, there’s Nick Jr. right? So let’s make Nick Sr. It’ll be Nickelodeon for the middle-aged. Then maybe parents could actually enjoy watching cartoons with their kids.

My ideas for the starting lineup:  The Littles, Duck Tales, Fraggle Rock, Muppet Babies, Jetsons, and of course the Smurfs.

Not to mention an evening run of: Transformers, Punky Brewster, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Alf, and She-Ra: Princess of Power.

I think it could work.

Thank You Tina Fey.

You did it! You managed to bring Harry and the Hendersons back into the limelight. I don’t care that it was only a 5 second clip. That’s more screen time than they’ve had in 15 years.

Maybe other people don’t pay attention to the little things. Maybe other people forget movies about Bigfoot trying to adapt to life in a house. But not me. And not you Tina. And for that reason, I love you more today than yesterday.
